Coordinator of Academic Support
St. Lawrence University seeks a person to serve as Coordinator of Academic Support. Working in the Office of Academic Advising Programs and reporting to its Associate Dean, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the department’s programs designed to facilitate academic success. In addition, the Coordinator will teach in the First Year Program (FYP) during each fall semester.
Description:
This is a full-time twelve-month staff position. The Coordinator will:
- Serve as a member of the Academic Advising Team, which includes the offices of Academic Achievement, Academic Support, and Special Needs;
- Serve as the person primarily responsible for proactive steps toward better academic success (time management, syllabus mapping, and study skills—workshops and tutorials);
- Provide services for students in academic difficulty, including management of the early-warning and midterm-deficiency procedures;
- Work with faculty who have assigned early-warnings or midterm-deficiencies;
- Provide tutorial assistance in writing and communications skills for students requiring learning accommodations;
- Team-Teach a First Year Program course each fall semester;
- Research and participate in initiatives connected to academic success, diversity, the Sophomore Year, and student retention;
- Organize and teach an annual course on academic skills for students mandated to summer school;
- Organize and teach workshops for peer tutors;
- Serve as the academic advisor to students in the FYP and as requested by the Associate Dean;
- Maintain program records, budgets, and the Academic Support web page.
Qualifications:
- One-on-one experience with students, preferably within the contexts of academic recovery
- Familiarity with a variety of university-level learning support programs
- Knowledge of and experience with peer-tutoring programs
- Familiarity with Opportunity Programs
- Experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and with diverse academic needs and learning styles
- Teaching experience
Education:
- M. A. in Education, English, Reading, Literacy, or Writing required. Ph.D. preferred. Equivalent educational background experience will be considered.
