Counselor

General Summary of Position

The counselor serves as a member of the Health and Counseling Center providing services to the students at St. Lawrence University. This is a three day per week, ten-month obligation. Major duties and responsibilities of the Counselor include providing: solution-focused individual and group counseling for students, counseling services during walk-in hours, crisis assessment and intervention services for emergency situations, preventive mental health outreach programs and workshops, provision of appropriate on and off-campus referrals, consultation to faculty, staff, students and parents regarding student concerns. Counselors by rotation provide after hours on-call services. Maintains clinical records in accordance with SLU policy and NY state and federal regulations.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Counseling Center Director and Vice President of Student Life

This position may involve evening or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in counseling or clinical psychology, counseling, counselor education, marriage and family therapy, social work or related field.
  • If not currently licensed, the position requirement is to obtain New York licensure within two years of date of hire. Eligible for New York State MHC licensure limited permit
  • Knowledge and skills in short-term/time-limited individual and group counseling, consultation and outreach
  • Strong work ethic and interpersonal skills
  • Strong commitment to workplace honesty, integrity, confidentiality, direct communication, teamwork, collaboration, and professional ethics

Desired Qualifications

Preferred qualifications: Licensed or licensed eligible at the masters/doctorate level in the state of New York; experience in a higher education setting; clinical experience with short-term treatment; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, administrators, and other members of the community; ability to work cooperatively on interdisciplinary team, to take initiative, and to be flexible in response to developing demands and challenges of the position.
