Science Instrumentation GPS/ GIS Technician
St. Lawrence University seeks a full time Science Instrumentation GPS/ GIS Technician to provide logistical and technical support for field research undertaken by science students and faculty on campus properties. Technical assistance is needed for the installation, use, and maintenance of a variety of scientific monitoring equipment and GPS portable units. The Technician will instruct users of portable and fixed equipment and assist them with collecting, downloading, and using data. These responsibilities include maintenance of ISEI weather station equipment and collection, processing, maintenance and distribution of the weather station’s data. The Technician will train and supervise student assistants to help maintain field equipment and ensure its functionality.
The Technician assists with the installation, use and maintenance of the GIS Program’s computers, GIS software, and large scale plotter. In consultation with the GIS Specialist, the technician will work closely with IT to develop the Spatial Analysis Lab‘s computer image. The Technician administers the web mapping software, creates web map services and maintains the web pages for the Libraries’ GIS Program and for the ISEI program. The Technician supervises printing with the GIS Program’s large scale plotter. Administrative assistance will be required of the Technician to track purchases, service contracts and warranties for equipment as well as its usage.
Minimum requirements are a Bachelor’s degree in the sciences, engineering, or geography and demonstrated experience with data collection and science electronic instrumentation, GPS data collection and/or automated field-monitoring equipment, and GIS applications, particularly ESRI products. Experience with Windows operating systems, software installation, and digital file formats; demonstrated ability to analyze and solve technical problems with computer hardware and electronic equipment; knowledge of web design or web mapping software; and skills to organize and communicate effectively in an administrative and support role are highly preferred. This academic support position will be on a one-year renewable appointment; salary commensurate with experience.
