SAINTS COMPETE IN FINAL DAY OF NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS May 4: For the St. Lawrence men’s crew team, day two of the New York State Championships was highlighted by two third place finishes, as the Saints earned a bronze medal in the Novice Four race, while the Varsity 8 crew also rowed to a third place finish in the petite final in the regatta, held in Whitney Point, NY.
The Novice Four boat, which included first-years Greg Gotta ( Northbridge, MA/St. John’s), Cam West (New Britain, CT/ Avon Old Farms), Brendan McGrath (Hingham, MA/Hingham), Nick Blum (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and first-year coxswain Meghan Koeller, placed third behind Iona, the winner of the event with a time of 6:56, while Buffalo clocked in at 7:33.8. St. Lawrence finished with a time of 7:38.7, ahead of Vassar (7:48.1), Geneseo (7:51.2) and Albany (8:06.0) to medal in the timed final event.
The Men’s Varsity 8 crew raced in the petite final, where the top three places were separated by just under four seconds, with Binghamton’s crew earning the win, while Hamilton edge the Saints with a time of 6:23.2, while St. Lawrence clocked in six-tenths behind them at 6:23.8. Coming in behind the Scarlet and Brown was Rensselaer (6:53.3) and Albany (6:55.7).
The men’s varsity 8 boat included senior Kyle Emery (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary), junior Mike Syslo (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John’s), junior Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), junior Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley), seniors Seth Hussey (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford), Kit Wright (Johnson, VT/Lamoille Union), Tedd Rama (Cottekill, NY/Rondout Valley), and Evan Smith (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) with first-year coxswain Allison Webster (Weston, MA/Weston).
St. Lawrence will compete in the ECAC National Invitational on Saturday, May 10 in Worcester, MA.
SAINTS RACE WELL IN DAY ONE OF NYS CHAMPIONSHIPS May 3: The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team had a strong showing in the first day of the New York State Championships in Whitney Point, NY on Saturday, with the Varsity 8 crew in a position to win the petite final of their race, while the Novice Four will get a second crack at their event, both taking place on Sunday.
A tough race was in store for St. Lawrence in the second heat of the Varsity 8 event, as the Saints faced strong, fast crews from Ithaca, Army and Hobart in their heat. The Bombers took the win with a time of 6:32.4, just ahead of the Statesmen, who placed second with a 6:33.7. Army came in third with a 6:45.6, while the Saints placed fourth, crossing the finish line at 7:08.6, ahead of Albany (8:02.4) and Rensselaer (9:06.5). With their finish, the Saints advance to the petite final, where they will be in contention for the win as they face Hamilton, Binghamton, Albany, and Rensselaer.

The Second Varsity 8 placed fourth out of seven crews in their final, behind the gold medal winners from Ithaca (7:04.3), second place Army (7:09) and RIT (7:17.5). St. Lawrence finished well ahead of Rochester (8:08.9), Rensselaer (9:18), and Hamilton (10:41.9). The Second Varsity 8 placed second behind the Statemen’s boat, finishing with a time of 7:30.7, ahead of both Union (7:51.9) and Hamilton (7:52.4). The crew from St. Lawrence included first-year Joey Colagrossi (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), junior Matt Sonagere (Auburn, ME/Edward Little High), junior Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NY/Conval Regional), first-year Dave MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School), sophomore Oke McAndrews (Dover, MA/Loomis Chaffee), senior Brent Davis (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), senior Lawson Condrey (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent), senior Andrew Lagos (Bow, NH/Bow), and first-year coxswain Alyssa Halton (Ithaca, NY/Lansing). The Novice Four rowed on Saturday, but regatta officials determined the race needed to be re-rowed, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday. The New York State Championships will continue on Sunday morning, where the Varsity 8 and Novice Four will compete in the finals of their events.
