SAINTS LOOK SHARP IN

OPENING RACES OF 2008-09

Oct. 4:  The St. Lawrence University men’s crew team kicked off their 2008-09 season on Saturday at the 2008 Hobart and William Smith Challenge in Geneva, NY.  Three 5000m races, which included Varsity 4, Novice 8 and Novice 4, were contested during the challenge which was held on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. 


The Saints’ Novice 4 boat clocked in at 17:40, only three seconds behind the winning boat from Marietta (OH).  The Scarlet and Brown narrowly defeated Liberty League rival, Hobart, by one second in the six-boat race.

 

Competing for the Scarlet and Brown in the men's opening race was first year coxswain Colin Loomis (Waddington, NY/Madrid-Waddington), rookies Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), John Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), and Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood School), and junior Kyle Dowman (Potsdam, NY/Vermont Academy).


St. Lawrence also collected a fifth place finish in the Novice 8 race with a time of 16:06.  Marietta’s top two boats took first and second with times of 14:49 and 15:16, respectively, followed by RIT (15:19) and Hobart (15:24).

 

Rowing in the Novice 8 race for the Saints was coxswain Loomis, first years Justin Raffaeli (Pound Ridge, CT/Kent School), Brent Underwood (Slovang, CA/Santa Ynez Valley Union H.S.), Jamie Cook (Madison, CT/The Williams School), Iain Hart (Duluth, MN/East H.S.) Mike MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), Griffin Green (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), Igor Dabik (Skopje, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase H.S.) and Conor Peterson (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union).


In the 18-boat Varsity 4 race, St. Lawrence entered three teams, with the “A” squad finishing in 12th place overall behind a time of 17:03.  The “C” boat finished two spots behind in 14th position (17:21) while the “B” boat clocked in at 18:24.  The winning boat in the Varsity 4 race was from Marietta with a time of 16:01.

 

St. Lawrence's 'A' boat contained sophomore coxswain Allison Webster (Lincoln, MA), seniors Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional), and Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), sophomore Dave MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School) and senior Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NH/Conval Regional H.S.).

 

In the 'B' boat was sophomore coxswain Alyssa Halton (Ithaca, NY/Lansing H.S.), senior Matthew Sonagere (Auburn, ME, Edward Little H.S.), Andrew Kraus, sophomores Cam West (New Britain, CT/Avon Old Farms) and Greg Gotta (Northbridge, MA/St. John's H.S.).

 

The final Saint entry in the race included first year coxswain Mike Cianca (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Southerland), Schrade, Willams, as wellas sophomores Nick Blum (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and Jose Colagrossi (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich H.S.).


The Saints men’s crew team will be in action again next weekend on Sunday, October 4th at the Head of Genesee.
