TRIO OF UPPERCLASSMEN TO

CAPTAIN SAINTS IN 2009

June 9: St. Lawrence University’s head men’s cross country coach John Newman has announced that three upperclassmen, Terrence Fox ’10, Jacob Malcomb ’10 and Dan Ramsey ’11, will captain the Saints in the fall of 2009.  The trio will attempt to lead the Saints back to the NCAA Championship after a 17th place finish in 2008.

All three runners have been staples in the Saints’ line-up throughout their time in Canton, NY.  Fox will serve his second consecutive years as a captain.  He picked up a third place finish in the opening race of 2008 at Plattsburgh last season and was 12th overall at the state meet.  Malcomb also put together an impressive junior year including three top-10 finishes, his best a third place effort at the Liberty League Championships.

Meanwhile, Ramsey, who will be the lone junior captain in 2009, will be out to defend his Liberty League individual Championship this season.  The Essex Junction, VT native logged six top-10 finishes as a junior including a seventh place overall finish at the 2008 NCAA Atlantic Regional.

“In talking with each of the three captains, they are honored, excited and ready to help our team reach its fullest potential in 2009,” said Coach Newman.  “Their experience along with their dedication, passion, modesty, consistency, and communication skills will enhance their ability to lead and set a firm example for the underclassmen.”

The St. Lawrence University men’s cross country team will be out to capture the program’s 16th straight Liberty League title and earn a bid to the NCAA Championship field again in 2009.

SAINTS SWEEP LIBERTY LEAGUE

END-OF-SEASON AWARDS

Dec. 5:  The St. Lawrence University men’s cross country team swept the 2008 Liberty League awards, as the conference named its annual award winners on Friday.  Sophomore Dan Ramsey was named the 2008 Runner of the Year, while first-year student Steve Kiplagat was tapped as the Rookie of the Year.  Finally, head coach John Newman was named the conference’s Coach of the Year for the fourth time in five years.

“Dan (Ramsey) and Steve (Kiplagat) were so important to our success this season, and I am very proud of each of their work throughout the season,” said Coach Newman.  “I’m also honored to be selected as Coach of the Year, but without the dedication and effort by our team, it wouldn’t be possible.”

Ramsey, a four-time Liberty League Performer of the Week, was the 2008 Liberty League champion and was the Saints' consistent front-runner throughout the season. He earned top-10 finishes at the 2008 Pre-Regional (6th), the Inter-Regional Rumble (3rd) and the 2008 NCAA Atlantic Regional (7th). The Essex Junction, VT native concluded his season with a 69th place finish at NCAA's.

Kiplagat made his presence felt in his opening season with the Scarlet and Brown. The Iten, Kenya native was the team's top finisher at the 2008 NCAA Championship in 58th place. He was also one of the team's most clutch performers down the stretch of the season, as he placed 11th at the Atlantic Regional to help the Saints secure their first team berth since 2002. Kiplagat was a three-time selection as Liberty League Rookie of the Week and was also selected Liberty League Performer of the Week once.

Meanwhile, Coach Newman guided the Saints to their 14th consecutive Liberty League team title and to a team berth in the 2008 NCAA Championship for the first time since 2002. The Scarlet and Brown finished 17th in the national race under his guidance.

Though the 2008 cross country season has come to a close, Ramsey, Kiplagat and Coach Newman have now set their sights on the 2008-09 Indoor Track season, which begins on Saturday, December 13 when the Saints host the 2008 Holiday Relays.
