STEWART VOTED 2009 CAPTAIN;

MBONG, CARR NAMED ASSISTANT CAPTAINS AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

May 12: At the St. Lawrence University men’s soccer team’s annual banquet in late April, Saints Head Coach Bob Durocher announced that the team had voted James Stewart ’11 as captain for the 2009 campaign, while Emmanuel Mbong ’10 and Reed Carr ’10were named assistant captains for the upcoming season.

In his sophomore campaign, Stewart (St. Davids, ONT/Sir Winston Churchill) played center back, anchoring the St. Lawrence defense. He played and started in each of St. Lawrence's 21 games, and used his offensive tactics to score three goals and tally two assists for eight points in the 2008 campaign. He netted the game winner in St. Lawrence's opening contest against Johnson and Wales and also against non-conference opponent RIT. In the Saints' 3-2 OT win over Clarkson, Stewart had the game-tying goal and was the second assist on the game winner. He was named Defensive Performer of the Week after the first weekend of action and was later named to the Liberty League First Team. Stewart also earned a spot on the All-Region Third Team for his efforts.

In his junior season, Mbong (Norman,OK/Norman) was one of the Saints' offensive leaders, tallying 15 points in just 14 games and was named to the Lotto Classic All-Tournament Team for his efforts in the Scarlet and Brown's opening weekend. The Norman, OK native scored five goals and five assists before enduring a season-ending injury in St. Lawrence's contest against Trinity (TX), who was ranked first in the country at the time. Despite his injury, Mbong received postseason accolades, as he was a All-Conference Second Team selection.

Carr (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union) earned his first collegiate start as a junior and went on to do so in all of the Saints' 21 contests as he became a big part of St. Lawrence's offense in 2008.  He was also a Liberty League All-Academic selection.

MOORE, STEWART NAMED TO NSCAA

ALL-REGION THIRD TEAM

Dec. 16: Senior midfielder and captain Ryan Moore and sophomore back James Stewart were both named to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas All-Region Third Team last week in honor of their efforts throughout the 2008 campaign.

In Moore’s (Keene, NH/Keene) final season, the senior tallied one goal and eight assists and was critical in the midfield for St. Lawrence, guiding them to a 13-7-1 overall record and an NCAA Tournament berth, his third trip in four seasons.

Stewart (St. Davids, ONT/Sir Winston Churchill) anchored the St. Lawrence defense in each of the Saints' 21 games and used his versatility and knowledge of the game to find ways to put the ball in the back of the net.  Defensively, Stewart helped the Saints earn six shutouts and also tallied eight points, including 3 goals and 2 assists.  Two of his three goals were game winners.

St. Lawrence claimed the 2008 Liberty League championship title in November, earning their 10th NCAA Tournament trip in eleven seasons.  They defeated MIT in the first round 3-2 after scoring three late game goals to come back for the victory, but fell to host Amherst College, who made it to the national semifinals, 1-0 in the second round.
