FIVE SAINTS HONORED FOR
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
Aug. 25: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced that five members of the St. Lawrence University tennis programs earned ITA Scholar Athlete Awards for the 2007-08 season.
Amin Danai ’08 joined teammates Christopher Tamm ’10 and Ryan Gillard ’11 as recipients on the men’s side, while Chelsea Hubbell ’10 and Mackenzie Hall ’11 were honored on the women’s team. Danai became the first student in the program’s storied history to receive the honor four consecutive seasons.
“These five student athletes promote excellence both in the classroom and on the tennis court, and I’m extremely proud of their accolades,” said Saints head coach Jeremy Freeman.
To be eligible for ITA’s Scholar Athlete Award, students had to post a grade point average of 3.2 or higher for the 2007-08 academic year.
SATKOWSKI LEADS SAINTS TO 17th IN FINAL NORTHEAST REGION RANKINGS
June 6: The St. Lawrence University men’s tennis team finished the 2007-2008 season ranked 17th in the ITA’s Northeast Region. The Saints landed in the top-20 thanks to fantastic tennis played by their top player, Jon Satkowski, as well as a very deep roster than included two dynamic rookies.
The Scarlet and Brown posted a solid 13-6 overall record and had four individuals and two doubles teams earn Liberty League All-Conference honors. Satkowski, the conference’s only unanimous selection as a singles player, was earned First Team honors alongside fellow junior Pete Abernethy, who emerged as a sound No. 2 competitor. Satkowski and his doubles partner Chris McDonald also nabbed First Team Doubles honors for a 12-4 record at the top spot.
Senior Amin Danai and first year student Ryan Gillard picked up All-Conference Honorable Mention for their 2007-2008 results. Gillard joined fellow rookie Will Cook in doubles play to give the Saints a tough No. 2 doubles tandem that earned All-Conference honors as well.
“Though we had a very young team this season, I thought we worked extremely hard and made a solid run at the NCAA Tournament,” said Saints’ head coach Jeremy Freeman. “Jon certainly had another great season, but our depth proved to be key throughout the year. With our top five players returning, one of our goals will certainly be to earn a bid to NCAA’s.”
