SAINTS CONTINUE TO LOOK STRONG; EDGE OSWEGO 1-0

Sept. 11: Another solid performance from the back guided the St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win on Thursday, handing non-conference opponent Oswego their first loss of the season as the Saints collected their fourth win and earned their third straight shutout of their 2008 campaign.

The Scarlet and Brown now stand at a 4-0-1 mark, while the Lakers fall to 2-1-0 overall in their home opener.
Scoring the unassisted game-winner for the Saints was rookie forward Kristina Peso (Niagara on the Lake, ONT/Holy Cross Catholic Secondary), who tallied her first goal of her collegiate career to lead St. Lawrence to victory.

The visiting squad had a clear handle on their hosts throughout the entire contest, as the Saints defense only allowed Oswego to take two shots throughout the game.  On the offensive side of the ball, St. Lawrence was able to preserve possession of the ball and the tempo of the game, as they generated 14 shots with five on goal.

Peso was able to slip one of those shots past Lakers’ keeper Toby Klein, as the first year came off the bench in the second and scored the game-winner in the 66th minute.  She collected the ball at the top of the box and outran Oswego’s defenders to create her own angle to score and give the Saints a 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish to Oswego.

St. Lawrence keeper Abby van Geldern (Rowayton, CT/Brien McMahon) had the help of her backs to insure no ball came close to goal, as they all played an important roll in the shutout.

St. Lawrence will travel to Elmira, NY on Saturday to face the Soaring Eagles in another non-conference contest.  Elmira College currently stands at 0-4-0 overall heading into Saturday’s match.  The game is set to begin at 3:00pm.
