St. Lawrence's Gift Income Over $14 Million In Fiscal Year 2008-2009
St. Lawrence University's total gift income in fiscal year 2008-2009, which ended June 30, was $14,228,754. While the total represents a drop from the previous year's record-setting level, much of the decrease is attributed to several significant one-time-only gifts that were received in 2007-2008. Other factors affecting giving include the general downturn in the economy and instability of financial markets.

St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus August 26, marking the start of the academic year.

The St. Lawrence University Writers Series begins on Wednesday, September 9, with an appearance by author Francine Prose, who will speak and read from recent work at 8 p.m. in the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

SLU Basketball Players Conduct Camp In Dominican Republic
Six members of the St. Lawrence men's basketball team conducted a week-long basketball camp for youth in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in August.

New blog: "Golden Thoughts" is a blog by and for visitors to Thailand, our newest international program at Payap University in Chiangmai.. Among the features: a series of self-study lessons intended for students and other travelers expecting to live, study, or work in Thailand. The first lesson introduces the Thai language’s basic building blocks, using the numbers one through ten to illustrate the main points, while also highlighting unexpected parallels in the English language. Along the way, you will also learn little bits about Thai culture.

Dana Professor of Economics Steven Horwitz was quoted in ABC News "20/20" co-anchor John Stossel's syndicated newspaper column that ran on the Web and in papers across the country on August 26. Among the papers carrying the column are the Jacksonville Observer in Florida. An essay by Horwitz, on "debt pollution," was published in the Tampa Tribune on August 23.

Saints Sports
The 2009-10 St. Lawrence Saints athletics season kicks off this Tuesday when the women's soccer team hosts Cortland at MacAllaster Field. On Saturday, men's soccer hosts Keene State and football hosts Ithaca College. For a look at the schedules and season previews for all fall teams, check out the new Saints Sports Web Site.

Hall of Fame Inductees Announced: The 1976 football team, the first in St. Lawrence University history to earn an NCAA tournament berth, and four outstanding athletes will be inducted into the St. Lawrence University Athletic Hall of Fame as its class of 2009 on Sept. 26, highlighted by the annual induction luncheon. Michelle Amidon '92, a standout in soccer and ice hockey; Erin Davis Garfield '90, a national champion in riding; David L. Jacobs '57, a skier at St. Lawrence and a leader in the ski industry following his graduation; and Bea Doering Shea '81, a lacrosse all-star will join the members of the football team as the 2009 inductees.
