New Students Welcomed At Matriculation
Songs, speeches and smiles welcomed the 653 newest Laurentians, the Class of 2015, and their families at Matriculation ceremony on Sunday, August 21. The event marks the first official gathering of the entire class at the start of their time together at St. Lawrence.
Read the remarks made by President William Fox at the ceremony, titled "Books and Bells."
SLU Math Prof Wins National Award For Teaching
St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Mathematics Sam Vandervelde has won a 2011 Henry L. Alder Award, for distinguished teaching by a beginning college or university mathematics faculty member. The award is given by the Mathematical Association of America.

Effects Of New Media On Culture, Society Explored In SLU Talk
Michael Wesch, associate professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University, will give a talk called "Mediated Culture: What's at Stake?" on Tuesday, August 30, at 7 p.m. in Eben Holden at St. Lawrence University. The event, the Hays and Margaret Crimmel Colloquium on Liberal Education, is open to the public, free of charge. It is the opening event in the University's Contemporary Issues Forum, which this year explores issues related to technology, humanity and democracy.

St. Lawrence's Adirondack Semester program was featured in the "Cool Schools" issue (September/October 2011) of Sierra magazine, the publication of the Sierra Club. The feature is titled "A Semester in the Woods" and includes photos from the fall 2010 semester.
An August 14 Los Angeles Times story which quoted Thelmo President John R. (Robby) Glass '13, on how the economy is affecting college students and recent grads, was picked up by Associated Press and ran in a number of other outlets around the nation, including the Nashville Tennessean and Nashua (NH) Telegraph (Aug. 18); the Lakeland (FL) Ledger and Scranton (PA) Times-Tribune (Aug. 17);  and the Baltimore Sun (Aug. 14).
Pre-Orientation trips to the Adirondacks for first-year students were the featured topic for an August 20, 2011 story in the Watertown Daily Times.
An opinion piece by Dana Professor of Economics Steven Horwitz, originally published in the Austin (TX) American Statesman August 14, defending presidential candidate Mitt Romney's controversial statement that "corporations are people," has also been published in a number of other newspapers, including the New Jersey Star-Ledger (Aug. 16); the Buffalo News and Palm Beach Post (Aug. 18);  and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (Aug. 21). Horwitz has also been a guest on a number of radio programs recently, including WAFS in Atlanta and Southern California Public Radio in Los Angeles.
