Three colleges in the New York Six consortium have joined ConnectNY, Inc., a non-profit organization for academic libraries dedicated to collaborative resource-sharing and collection-building. St. Lawrence is a member of both organizations; former University Librarian Bart Harloe is the executive director of ConnectNY.

Trustee Derrick Pitts '78 Awarded Honorary Degree
La Salle University in Philadelphia presented an honorary degree to Trustee Derrick Pitts '78, chief astronomer and senior scientist for the Franklin Institute Science Museum, at its Honors Convocation on October 2.

Dana Professor of Canadian Studies Robert Thacker provided the October 3 commentary for WAMC Albany's "Academic Minute," on Canada's role as a producer of oil. The program airs on public radio stations around the country.
An opinion piece in the Sunday Review section of the New York Times on October 2 quoted Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Jeff Rickey, on the applications of "super people."
Reuters wire service ran a story on September 29 on the study by Assistant Professor of Psychology Serge Onyper and Associate Professor of Psychology Pamela Thacher showing that students who had earlier classes also got better grades.
An article by Co-CIO for Information Technology Sondra Hedger Smith, on the usefulness of assessment practices, was published in the October issue of University Business magazine.

Volleyball Kicks off Power of Pink Week with 4-0 Effort
Volleyball won all four of its matches in Liberty League action, defeating Union, Bard, Skidmore and Vassar as St. Lawrence kicked off the Power of Pink week, a week of efforts to raise awareness of and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Men's soccer held onto its spot atop the national rankings with wins at Bard (5-0) and Vassar (1-0) to improve to 10-0. Women's soccer tied Vassar 1-1 and beat Bard 3-0 to run its unbeaten streak to six games. Women's hockey opened its season with an impressive 6-3 non-league win over rival Clarkson Saturday. Friday, the Saints dropped a 2-1 decision to McGill University. Men's hockey lost a scrimmage game to Carleton 5-2. Field hockey won a pair of games, 3-1 over St. John Fisher and 2-1 over Nazareth. Women's tennis shut out Plattsburgh 9-0. Men's golf placed third at the ECAC Upstate and Metro Championship. Football was unable to get its offense going in a 23-0 loss at Hobart.
