First-Week Events Highlighted
First-year students arrived last week and participated in pre-Orientation trips, Orientation and Matriculation before settling in to classes and the traditional Convocation ceremony marked the start of the academic year. Take a look at our photo album from those first few days. Also online are President Fox's speech at Matriculation, both text and video, as he addressed the Class of 2016 and their families. Text of his remarks to faculty and staff at Convocation are online as well.
St. Lawrence University Holding Campus Safety Fair
Campus safety is a growing concern for students, parents and college officials. St. Lawrence University's Security and Safety department is starting off the academic year by holding an all-day Campus Safety Fair on Thursday, September 6.

Faculty, Staff Receive Awards At St. Lawrence University Convocation
St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus August 29, marking the start of the academic year.

SLU Hosting Urban/Rural Preservation Symposium
St. Lawrence University will host a three-day symposium on urban and rural preservation, focusing on sustainability of the "built environment," September 9 thorugh 11. Symposium events and speakers will explore how sustainability is achieved through the preservation of historic urban and rural architecture and settings, in harmony with nature as well as people. The symposium features speakers from historic cities in Canada, Italy and Slovakia which are on the UNESCO list of World Historic Heritage Sites, as well as North Country experts.

Grant Awarded To St. Lawrence For Art Conservation
The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University has been awarded a grant of $2,904 from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network to conserve a painting in its permanent collection by Harold Weston.

SLU Government Prof Named Book Review Editor For Latin American Studies Journal
St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Government Shelley McConnell has been named book review editor for the Latin American Research Review, the research journal of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

An invasive plant was discovered in area lakes this summer by Frances McNierney '14, as a result of her University Fellows research. The news was the subject of a story in the Watertown Daily Times on September 4.
An essay titled "Financial markets are not 'every man for himself'," by Dana Professor of Economics Steve Horwitz was published in the Buffalo News on September 4.
Professor of Government and Associate Dean for International and Intercultural Studies Karl Schonberg was quoted in a September 3 story in The Chronicle of Higher Education, about programs of study abroad for first-year students.
Inspired by a famous work by the late John Lennon, Professor of Government Alan Draper wrote an opinion piece for Labor Day, published by the Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch website on August 31, right before the holiday weekend.
Who won the War of 1812? Your answer may depend upon which side of the U.S.-Canadian border you're on. Associate Professor of History Melissane Parm Schrem participated in an August 27 Internet chat session debating the question, sponsored by and Post Media newspapers in Canada.

Soccer Teams Claim Lotto Tourney Titles
The Fall sports season kicked off last week, with the two soccer teams leading the way, both claiming Lotto Tournament titles. Men's soccer, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, defeated the University of LaVerne 2-0 and Endicott College 3-0. Women's soccer thumped John Jay 10-0 and then won the title with a 2-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. Volleyball opened at Oneonta, going 2-2 with wins over SUNYIT and Hunter. Football opened at Utica College and dropped a 40-7 decision. Field hockey lost 5-1 to Oneonta and 1-0 to Utica.

Football Teams With Fort Drum For 'Tribute To The Troops' Events
The St. Lawrence University football team will honor those serving in the military on Saturday, September 8, with a "Tribute to the Troops" event, in conjunction with Fort Drum. On Wednesday, September 5, the team hosts a panel discussion.

Women's Basketball Places in National Top 10 for Academics
The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team earned a top-10 finish in the 2012 Women's Basketball Coaches Association national academic rankings.  The Saints posted a team GPA of 3.55, good for seventh place overall. It is the second time in program history that the team earned a spot in the top-10.  The 2007-08 team finished third in the national academic rankings.
