Liberal Arts Education More Important than Major, National Survey Shows
A job candidate’s ability to think critically, communicate clearly and solve complex problems – the kinds of skills taught at liberal arts colleges like St. Lawrence University – are more important than a candidate’s undergraduate major, says an overwhelming majority of employers, according to a national report released today.

A new book written by St. Lawrence University Professor of Gender Studies R. Danielle Egan cites research showing that widespread sexualization of girls in our culture, which most have accepted as fact, simply doesn't exist.

Geologist to Speak at SLU April 18
Richard Ernst, scientist-in-residence in the Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University, will give the 2013 Susan Caroline Ferguson Memorial Lecture in Geology on Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Lawrence University’s Hepburn Hall, Room 218. The talk, “Extreme Volcanism through Time: From the Sahara to the High Arctic and to Other Planets,” is open to the public, free of charge.

SLU Economics Department to Host Robert Garnett April 22
Robert Garnett, professor of economics at Texas Christian University, will give a lecture titled “Beneficence and Commerce: Adam Smith’s Unfinished Project” on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Lawrence University’s Hepburn Auditorium. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and refreshments will be served.

Three Hockey Players Named All-Americans, O’Neill ’16 Wins Liberty League Individual Golf Title
Men's hockey players Kyle Flanagan ’13, George Hughes ’13 and Greg Carey ’14 were named to the Men's CCM Hockey Division I All America team as selected by the American Hockey Coaches Association, announced last week.  Claire O’Neill ’16 was named the women’s golf Liberty League Player of the Year after a three-stroke win to take the individual title over the weekend at the conference championships. She led the team to a fourth place overall finish. Women’s lacrosse earned crucial Liberty League wins this weekend, defeating William Smith (8-7) on Friday and Union (11-10) on Saturday, while men's lacrosse defeated North Country foe Clarkson 10-3 last Wednesday. Men’s tennis fell to Rochester on Saturday 9-0 but defeated Hobart 6-3 on Sunday. Women’s tennis had the same fate against Rochester and William Smith, falling 6-3 to the Yellowjackets and earning a 6-3 win against the Herons. Softball split against RIT (4-3 win, 1-0 loss) on Saturday and also against Rochester on Sunday (1-0 win, 6-0 loss). Baseball went 1-3 last week, falling to Union in a doubleheader on Tuesday (6-3, 5-4), then defeating Vassar 4-3 on Sunday before losing 4-2 in the second game. Men’s golf finished third at the NYU Invitational and men’s and women’s track and field competed at the Robert Wesleyan Invitational.
