Memories of Charles Scanlon '10

To:                  The St. Lawrence Community

From:              President Daniel F. Sullivan

Date:               June 7, 2009

Subject:          In Memory: Charles Scanlon '10

The most difficult communication a president can share is that of the death of a student.  My sad duty today is to tell you of the accidental death on Saturday, June 6, of Charles Scanlon '10, of Shaker Heights, Ohio. Charlie was killed in a hiking accident on a mountain near the small town of Mossman, outside Cairns, Australia.  He was with three other students at the time, on a day free from classes.  Charlie was studying at James Cook University as a participant in a St. Lawrence international studies program and was an environmental-economics major at St. Lawrence.

University officials at James Cook University, working with the United States Embassy, coordinated the response to Charlie's accident, and contacted his family and fellow St. Lawrence students who are in Australia.  I, too, expressed Ann's and my most profound sympathies to the Scanlon family.

We will work with Charlie's family to understand their wishes for a memorial service.  We have set up a Memorial Web page, at which you may share your thoughts and wishes, celebrating Charlie's life and extending your condolences to all who love him.

Update June 17: Charlie Scanlon's family has confirmed arrangements for services in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Calling hours will be at the Brown-Forward Funeral Service, 17022 Chagrin Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44120, on Tuesday, June 23, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.  A funeral service will take place at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, at the First Baptist Church of Cleveland, 3630 Fairmount Blvd, Shaker Heights.

The funeral service will have the family's obituary of Charlie on the Brown-Forward web site tomorrow, June 18.

His family requests that expressions of condolence can be in the form of gifts to St. Lawrence University's Outdoor Program, with gifts directed to the Development Office, Vilas Hall.
