Welcome to the Best Backyard Ever

St. Lawrence University is proud to call Canton, New York, home. Located in Northern New York, the village of Canton is an active and welcoming community tucked between the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and the Canadian border.

Between campus and Canton, everything you need is here. Locally-owned eateries, shops, salons, bed and breakfasts, a movie theater, events venue and a robust seasonal farmer’s market line Main Street, while grocery stores, banks, and pharmacies are all also within walking distance of St. Lawrence.

People who live here love it here. In a recent survey, St. Lawrence County was rated “Excellent” or “Good” on several key Quality of Life Indicators, including quality of the environment, public outdoor recreational activities, and safety. Canton’s location in the heart of St. Lawrence County makes it easy to connect students with meaningful internship, volunteer and other professional opportunities during the academic year. Most recently, our students enjoyed experiences hosted by or working with local, regional and state politicians, entrepreneurs, economic developers, business owners, news and media, and medical and legal professionals.

With St. Lawrence being the closest liberal arts college to an international capital and only 20 minutes from the Adirondack Park, it’s normal for students to spend part of the morning hiking, canoeing or snowshoeing and the afternoon at the Canadian Parliament for a class field trip. Students enjoy the endless adventures the region has to offer, whether it’s weekend day trips to Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain or road trips to discover nearby diners and locally-owned shops.

Get to Know Canton

Early each fall, St. Lawrence helps coordinate the STOMP, an event that gives students a chance to explore downtown Canton businesses and everything local merchants have to offer while enjoying music, food, games and other entertainment in the scenic Village Park.
