There are many ways to get to St. Lawrence and the North Country, yet they all have one thing in common: the scenic views along the way will take your breath away.

Please note: Canton, New York, is located 20 miles from the U.S.-Canadian border. We strongly recommend that non-U.S. citizens who do not have permanent resident status and who plan to travel to or visit St. Lawrence have their passport, visa, and other immigration paperwork with them at all times.

  • Albany: I-87 (Northway) to Exit 23 (Warrensburg)l Rt. 28 to Blue Mountain Lake; Rt. 30 to Tupper Lake; Rt. 3 West to Rt. 56; Rt. 68 to Canton. (3.5 hours away)
  • Burlington, Vermont: I-89 north to Exit 17, Route 2; follow signs to Grand Isle Ferry (daily, year-round); upon exiting ferry, Route 314 to I-87 south; I-87 south one exit to Exit 38; Route 374 west to Chateaugay; Route 11 south to Malone; Route 11B to Potsdam; Route 11 to Canton.   • Ottawa**: Rt. 416 South, follow signs for Bridge to USA, turn right onto Route 37 West, follow signs to Rt. 68 East, Rt. 68 merges with Route 11 in Canton, drive about one mile from intersection of Routes 68 and 11 to the University’s Romoda Drive entrance. (90 minutes away)

Please keep in mind that there are limited Uber or Lyft services in the North Country. Families and students traveling from an airport or transportation center are encouraged to rent a vehicle to travel to our campus in Canton, New York. 

A shuttle is available for currently enrolled students traveling to and from the Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Adirondack Trailways Bus Service

Adirondack Trailways serves the Canton and surrounding North Country communities. The Canton bus stop, a ten minute walk from from campus, picks up and drops off passengers at Gamer Craze, 21 Miner Street, Canton, New York. 

The Trailways bus has a routes to and from Albany, Rochester, and New York City.

Student Tips for Traveling to New York City from Canton:

  • The departure site/origin must say 21 Miner Street, Canton, New York, 13617
  • Book the trip with only one transfer if possible to cut down on travel time
  • While the bus does stop at the Syracuse Hancock airport, the actual transfer location will be the Syracuse Walsh Regional Transportation Center. From there, you will transfer to another bus that will take you to the Port Authority in New York City.

  • If you plan to bring a large suitcase, have family or friends meet you at Port Authority so they can help you transport luggage home.

  • Prepare for a long trip and keep yourself entertained

    • Make sure all your electronic devices are fully charged

    • Download movies or a show to binge-watch

    • Listen to music 

    • Bring a book

    • Bring a bottle of water and snacks

Leave the driving to us during breaks! We work with a private bus company to charter buses to and from several Northeast destinations for current students during academic breaks including Mid-semester Break (fall semester), Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Mid-semester Break (spring semester), and Spring Break. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Campus Parking & Registration

Students are welcome to bring vehicles to campus for the academic year. If you do, you will need to register your vehicle with Safety and Security. You will be assigned a parking lot based on where you live on campus.

Please register at the Department of Safety and Security (GPS: 76 Park Street, Canton, NY 13617; the department entrance is in the back of the building).

You will be directed to proper parking areas upon registration.
