Brookings Institution Summer Internship
African Security Initiative
Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C.
Applications for Paid Summer Internship (Remote vs In-person internship determined by Brookings and SLU policies related to public health).
(Open to current SLU students---deadline to apply: Friday March 15th)
The African Security Initiative is a program housed at the world renowned Brookings Institution. Brookings is a leading D.C. “think-tank” whose mission focuses on the intersection between academic research and public policy. The African Security Initiative brings together scholars, government officials and other policy makers to examine a wide range of issues impacting security on the African continent today. Past events and research has focused on U.S. foreign policy in Africa, conflict, electoral reform and executive power, and a wide range of other issues.
The African Security Initiative intern will work under the supervision of Dr. Michael O’Hanlon, who is a senior fellow in Foreign Policy at Brookings and directs the African Security initiative. Interns will help organize public events and assist in on-going research and publication activities associated with the African Security Initiative.
The selected intern will work full time at Brookings and is expected to reside in the D.C. area for at least 8 weeks if the internship is in-person. Start and end dates for the internship will be negotiated directly with Dr. O’Hanlon (but generally start June 6th and end by August 12th). St. Lawrence will provide a living stipend of approximately $600 per week for the duration of the internship (up to 12 weeks). Students may also apply for a need based relocation stipend of up to $500 to facilitate travel to Washington D.C. if public health conditions allow for in-person.
Graduating seniors are eligible to apply but must be eligible to work in the U.S. after graduation.
Qualified applicants should have a strong academic background in African studies, government/international relations and possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Students with experience in African studies related off-campus study, language training, and independent research are particularly encouraged to apply
