Exploring Digital Dramaturgy in Undergraduate Theatre and Performance Courses with Dr. Angela Sweigart-Gallagher, Associate Professor and Chair, Performance and Communication Arts

Digital media and storytelling are omnipresent in our lives. Still, few faculty and students focus their attention on how theatre and performance students can use digital writing platforms to share information about theatre with potential readers and theatrical audiences. This talk details a digital dramaturgy assignment developed for Dr. Sweigart-Gallagher’s course Theatre, Sustainability, and the Natural World at St. Lawrence University. This highly scaffolded writing assignment helps students develop a thesis-driven argument, apply critical theory to a theatrical text, effectively incorporate and cite quotations, and work through the process of revision and refinement while still stretching the bounds of the traditional essay. Dr. Sweigart-Gallagher will discuss how the project engages students in critical analysis, research, and the writing process while acknowledging that how we read and write has changed in our increasingly digital world.
