Sharing the spark: An anthropologist among bird guides
with Dr. Wendi Haugh, Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies

Pursuing a career as a professional bird guide is an unconventional path, and mentorship and support are critical in fanning an initial spark of interest into the sustained flame of profession. In recent years, bird guides in East Africa have formed vibrant communities which aim to provide mutually supportive networks for working guides and to nurture the next generation of up-and-coming guides. In this talk, Dr. Haugh will weave together her own story as a birder and scholar with what she has been learning about bird guides in East Africa through participant-observation research and open-ended interviews. Along the way, Dr. Haugh will talk about bird guiding as a learning-centered profession, a people-focused profession, and a joyful profession.
