St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Economics Sun-Ki Choi has co-authored a paper that was recently published by Education Economics, a peer-reviewed journal serving as a forum for debate in all areas of the economics and management of education.
The paper, titled "Does job mismatch affect wage and job turnover differently by gender?”, analyzes college graduates in the workplace to evaluate the effects of horizontal mismatches between education and jobs on wages and mobility.
Using the Heckman-Lee and probit models, Choi and his co-author, Hyungjo Hur, show that a gender wage gap still exists. However, the size of the gender wage differential depends on the extent of mismatch. Specifically, the female wage penalty decreases from closely-related to somewhat-related and then increases from somewhat-related to not-related. They also show that the wage penalty motivates females to change jobs more often.
