Exploring Chemistry: SLU Students Shine at the ACS Spring 2025 Convention
From March 23 to March 26, 2025, the American Chemical Society's Spring Convention provided an exceptional platform for budding chemists to showcase their work and expand their horizons. This year, St. Lawrence University showcased the future of chemistry with Professor Dr. Samantha Glazier and two exceptional senior chemistry majors, Hadley Reinke and Joel Asare.
Hadley Reinke, who is specializing in Medicinal Chemistry, and Joel Asare, focusing on Physical Chemistry, stepped into the limelight by presenting their research posters to a diverse audience. This opportunity was not just a chance to share their findings but also an invaluable experience to engage with experts across the country. Both Hadley and Joel were able to attend keynote events that featured leading figures in the chemistry field, where they gathered insights that could shape their future careers.
The convention also fostered networking opportunities that proved beneficial for both students. Joel strengthened the valuable relationships he developed while collaborating on research with undergraduate peers from various institutions extending beyond SLU.
Meanwhile, Hadley took the opportunity to meet with a medical doctor, a connection that could bolster her journey toward medical school. Conversations with practicing professionals are substantial for students like Hadley, who aspire to bridge the disciplines of chemistry and medicine, and they shed light on the expectations and realities of medical careers.
The convention wasn’t just about the students; it provided a venue for Dr. Glazier to reconnect with influential members of the chemistry community. Among them was Dr. Catherine Ovitt, a SLU Chemistry alumnus from the class of 1996. Their reunion over lunch exemplifies the strong bonds formed in academia that can last a lifetime, reinforcing the importance of mentorship and camaraderie within the scientific field.
In a wonderful moment of recognition, Dr. Mark Bussell, Dr. Glazier’s former undergraduate advisor at Western Washington University, was celebrated with a lifetime achievement award for his dedication to undergraduate research. This honor is a testament to the impact of supportive educators in the growth and development of students, a sentiment which resonates deeply with convention attendees and offered a personal moment of pride for Dr. Glazier.
The American Chemical Society’s Conventions are more than just academic gatherings; they are a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and the future of chemistry. For students like Hadley and Joel, the experience is invaluable. The learning, networking, and the chance to present original research provide a significant steppingstone into their professional lives.
