Fall 2020 Sophomore Calendar of Events
October 3rd: First Generation Leadership Summit
This event will be facilitated by Tamam Waritu. Tamam is a nationally recognized speaker who is himself a first generation college graduate. As the first in his family to attend college, he went on to graduate from Harvard University and now mentors students and shares his story and strategies for success. Tamam will provide practical techniques on how first-gen students can cope with and transcend obstacles and barriers to reach their academic, leadership, and personal goals. For more information about Mr. Waritu please visit his website: https://www.twaari.com/ This event will be hosted on Zoom. It is open to all St. Lawrence students and you can register via Handshake.
October 19th: Navigating Your SLU Experience
Explore academic and co-curricular programs. Join the Faculty Director of the Sophomore Success Initiative, Dr. Mary Jane Smith, the Associate Dean for Academic Advising, Dr. Elun Gabriel, and Coordinator of Academic Engagement Matt McCluskey for a remote session as we talk about opportunities across St. Lawrence University's academic departments and co-curricular programs. We will help you explore your path at SLU and envision your career after graduation. This event will take place at 7 PM on 10/19.
November 2nd and 5th: Sophomore Boot Camp
Hear from alumni and parents across a variety of industry fields. Learn about about internship options and resources in those fields, career management skills, networking and professional communication in the Covid-19 era, and what employers are looking for from candidates. Sponsored by The Career Connections Office, this will be a series of virtual presentations in the afternoon and evening of November 2 and November 5. Please contact Geoff Falen at gfalen@stlawu.edu for more information.
November 9th : CIIS & Advising Workshop
Become more informed about off-campus study and academic majors. The Associate Dean of International and Intercultural Studies and the Associate Dean of Advising will host a remote open session to answer questions about declaring a major, finding an advisor, applying for an internship or fellowship, and applying for off-campus study. This program serves as a timely, practical check-in point as sophomores approach major declaration and the February deadline for off-campus study. This event will take place at 6 PM on 11/9.
Please reach out to Matt McCluskey for more information or Zoom links (which you also receive by email as a sophomore at St. Lawrence)
And keep an eye out for announcements about:
The Summer 2021 Saints Start Program
Major Declaration:
- February for fall/spring students
- May for fall/summer and spring/summer students
Note: Academic departments will be offering programming throughout the year to introduce students to their fields of study and welcome new majors. For example, the Psychology Department is offering a series of remote programs that will allow students to declare a major in that field by October 9th (they will also be offering similar events and declaration periods in the spring and summer semesters).
