Zenel Garcia, visiting assistant professor of government, co-authored a chapter about air power in Southeast Asia in a recently-published book.
Garcia worked with Maria Ostuoste, associate professor of political science at Cal State East Bay, on the chapter in the book Air Power in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific: Understanding Regional Security Dynamics, published by Taylor and Francis Books.
The chapter explores the complex nature of the development of air power in Southeast Asia. Specifically, it assesses how air power, long the wheelhouse of major powers for the purpose of obtaining air superiority and air control, has evolved as middle and small powers gradually develop this capability.
Garcia, who joined the St. Lawrence faculty in 2018, earned his master's degree in Asian studies in 2014 and a Ph.D. in International Relations in 2018 at Florida International University. His research interests focus on the intersection of international relations theory, security, and geopolitics. Specifically, how elite understandings of state security and geopolitical environment shape the rhetorical and empirical processes that lead to regional formation and transformation in Asia. At St. Lawrence, he is teaching courses in international security, strategic studies, and East Asian politics.
