A Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) instructional mini-grant provided Costume Shop Supervisor Selina French and three of her students with an opportunity to learn more about suit fashion and construction.
French brought her independent study student Brandon Calton, who is studying tailoring and costume construction, as well as shop stitchers Clare Jenkins ‘20 and Madeline Sheen ‘21 to the Surmesur Custom Menswear Shop in Ottawa for a two-hour instructional session with the shop manager.
St. Lawrence’s Costume Shop is a paid work-study organization run by students under the direction of French. They build costumes for the campus theatre and dance productions, as well as maintain a sizeable collection of costumes that can be loaned to students for academic endeavors, local schools, non-profits, and theater groups. The Costume Shop, which includes stitchers, hair, makeup, wardrobe, and loan crews, can have a total of 13-20 students working depending on the costuming needs each semester.
