Math Professor Publishes Calculus Book
Dr. Maegan Bos, Professor of Mathematics, recently published a calculus book which is aptly named "Yet Another Calculus Book," published by Kendall Hunt.
While there are many calculus books in print, Dr. Bos has always felt that many of the books on the market over complicate things when they present calculus. "Yet Another Calculus Book"
I like things short and sweet. I also find, in most cases, the use of “real life” examples is a ruse. Yes, we can use calculus to model certain situations, but we have to make so many simplifying assumptions that it hardly seems worth it. Rather than talking about rockets being launched (in a vacuum, with constant acceleration), I’d rather talk about launching a water balloon off of a building. I also have to make those simplifying assumptions, but my word problems might make you smile.
Dr. Maegan Bos has been teaching at St. Lawrence for almost 30 years. She is from North Carolina, getting her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Davidson College and her PhD from NC State University. She taught two years of high school before realizing that was not what she wanted to do. The teaching was good; the disciplining was not. After graduating from NC State, she came up to the North Country and began teaching at St. Lawrence. In addition to teaching many of the courses in the mathematics sequence, she has also taught many times in the FYP/FYS and recently was the director of the Bordeaux program.
