Quad Named for Brush; Gift to Renovate Walkways
The newly renovated Quad at St. Lawrence University was made possible by a generous gift from one of the University’s most exemplary benefactors, creating new entrances that will enhance the central green space on campus.
Trustee Emeritus Richard F. Brush ’52’s gift of $2 million has created a “Gateway to the Quad,” adding his support to the University endowment. He has made the gift in honor of his brother and Trustee Emeritus the late John “Jack” D. Brush ’50 as well as in honor of his lifelong St. Lawrence friends William R. “Bill” Caldwell ’50 and the late William J. “Bill” Davis ’50. In honor of this gift, the University will name the green space the Richard F. Brush ’52 University Quad.
“A thoughtful charitable gift to one’s alma mater is fulfilling to both the giver and the institution,” Brush said. “I am especially pleased to honor Jack, Bill and Bill, and help the University move forward.”
“This is an extraordinary gift to St. Lawrence because it is meant to enlarge the beauty of the campus,” said President William L. Fox ’75, “It helps the University with our campus master plan and it reinforces the life-long connections that are made among Laurentians. Dick’s generosity and loyalty to St. Lawrence are unmatched, and it is wonderful that he continues to demonstrate the importance of philanthropy for our students and other Laurentians. I am delighted that we now have the Brush Quad, and I know it will be loved by generations in the years ahead.”
Brush’s gift allowed the University to replace the paved roadways with walkways that run between the Richard F. Brush ’52 University Quad and Dean-Eaton Hall as well as from the Quad to the Sullivan Student Center. The new walkway extends Millennium Way from the Brewer Bookstore to the northwest corner of the Quad at Romoda Drive.
Brush, who resides in Fairport, New York, and on the Pacific shore of Oregon, has also been a very generous benefactor to the arts at the University. The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery is named in recognition of his generosity.
The Gateway to the Quad project was completed for the start of this year’s fall semester.
