Sarah Yablonski, Neuroscience Alumna, Participates in Teaching Residency at St. Lawrence
Sarah Yablonski visited her alma mater in Fall 2024 to participate in a teaching residency under the mentorship of Dr. Ana Estevez. Sarah earned her B.S. in Neuroscience from St. Lawrence University in 2019 and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Rochester. When she finishes her training, Sarah knows she wants to pursue a career as a professor at a small liberal arts college much like St. Lawrence. To that end, she completed an Advanced Teaching Citation at Rochester. This teaching citation required Sarah to lecture to undergraduates and to have her teaching evaluated. When thinking of ways to complete this requirement for her certification, Sarah immediately thought of St. Lawrence University. She and Dr. Estevez formulated a plan for Sarah to spend a week at SLU in October guest lecturing in Introduction to Neuroscience Lab and in Current Topics in Neuroscience seminar. Sarah applied for and was awarded a Career Exploration Grant from myHub at the University of Rochester to fund her week-long residency.
According to Dr. Estevez, “Sarah had a very successful residency. She was extremely well-prepared, had meticulous lesson plans, and effectively communicated her ideas. The materials she provided for the students and the execution of her lesson plans demonstrate her maturity as an instructor. Sarah is a naturally gifted teacher and I know she will be a wonderful professor and mentor to her students one day! It was a pleasure and an honor to host her for this residency!”
Sarah recently wrote up a blog post describing her experiences coming back home to her alma mater to teach.
Dr. Estevez said she would be happy to host any other Neuroscience alumni for a similar experience. Just be in touch!
