SLU Mathematics Graduates Featured in National Magazine.
Patti Frazer Lock (Mathematics) and George Ashline (SLU ’89) co-authored an article in Math Horizons looking at some of the paths that students take after graduating with a degree in mathematics.
The article “Career Paths and Suggestions: Alumni Reflections from Two Undergraduate Programs” describes the career paths and advice of six mathematics alumni from two undergraduate programs. Featured from St. Lawrence University are Dennis Lock (SLU ‘08), Laura Byer (SLU ‘11) and Francisco Rodriguez-Tineo (SLU ‘19). Career opportunities and employer demand for graduates completing majors in mathematics or a related field like statistics or data science are diverse, wide-ranging and continue to grow at a face pace. This publication highlights the exciting journey and post-graduation pursuits of these alumni as well as their timely recommendations for current and future mathematics majors. Math Horizons is a journal of the Mathematics Association of America designed for students of mathematics at all levels.
Patti Frazer Lock is Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at St. Lawrence University. She is a co-author on Statistics: Unlocking the Power of Data with Lock, Lock, Lock, Lock, and Lock, and is also a co-author on texts in Calculus, Applied Calculus, and Precalculus with Hughes-Hallett, McCallum, Connelly, et al. She has won numerous awards for her teaching and presentations. She has served on or chaired national committees on statistics and math education, and is currently the co-chair of the committee to revise the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE). She is passionate about finding ways to help more students succeed in, and enjoy, courses in mathematics and statistics.
George Ashline (SLU ‘89) is Professor of Mathematics at St. Michael’s College. He was a student of Patti Frazer Lock and Robin Lock while at St. Lawrence University. Patti and George enjoyed reconnecting to write this article!
