Dr. Mert Kartal (Government Department) alongside 16 eager students from his first-year seminar, "International Relations in Action," recently engaged in a four-day European Union (EU) simulation in Buffalo, NY. Hosted by the Institute for EU Studies at SUNY, this annual event, known as SUNY MEU, has been a cornerstone of experiential learning since 1988.
The simulation offers participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the proceedings of the European Council and the EU Council. This year's event boasted over 100 students from 16 universities and colleges. St. Lawrence was the most represented institution, with a total of 16 students in attendance, thanks to generous support from the Academic Dean's Office, the First Year Program, the Patti McGill Peterson Center for International and Intercultural Studies, and the Government Department.
Among the highlights, eight St. Lawrence students, representing Austria and the Netherlands, received the esteemed "Best Agenda Proposal Award." Furthermore, Shaun Kithinji was recognized as "The Most Effective Finance Minister," while Hanna Lindroth secured the title of "Best Negotiator," all of which underscores St. Lawrence's commitment to experiential learning and academic excellence.
Dr. Mert Kartal, an associate professor of Government at St. Lawrence, teaches courses in international relations and international organizations, with a particular emphasis on the EU and democratic governance. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for St. Lawrence's Diplomacy Lab program, an official partnership with the United States Department of State since 2023.
