As part of St. Lawrence's commitment to experiential learning and global engagement, 12 students in the New York City Semester Program, led by Associate Professor of Political Science Mert Kartal, recently visited the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations for a hands-on exploration of international diplomacy in action.
As part of the spring 2025 New York City Semester Program, 12 SLU students, accompanied by Associate Professor of Political Science Mert Kartal, visited the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in March for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on international diplomacy and global challenges.
The group was warmly welcomed by Ambassador Fergal Mythen, who shared valuable insights into Ireland’s role within the United Nations and the broader international community. The conversation explored the country’s contributions to peacekeeping, multilateral cooperation, and responses to pressing global issues. Students reflected on the experience as both inspiring and intellectually enriching.
“This kind of experiential learning brings international relations to life,” said Dr. Kartal, who is directing the NYC Semester Program this year. “Meeting with practitioners in the field helps students better understand the complexities of global governance and the importance of diplomacy in shaping international outcomes.”
The visit to the Irish Mission marked the final site visit of the semester before students participate in the National Model United Nations conference, one of the world’s most prominent simulations of the United Nations, taking place in New York City in April.
