St. Lawrence Hosts Laurentian Networking Reception for Fall NYC Semester Students
On Wednesday, October 23, St. Lawrence held a Laurentian Networking Reception at the prestigious Cornell Club in New York City (NYC). The event provided an opportunity for our 16 NYC Semester students to connect with alumni and other members of the Laurentian community. Thanks to the enthusiastic turnout from our alumni, the room was filled to capacity, reflecting the strong support for the program and St. Lawrence's dedication to fostering professional connections.
The reception began with opening remarks from Beth Dixon '10, Executive Director of NYC Internships, and Dr. Mert Kartal, Director of the NYC Semester Program. They highlighted the program’s growth and achievements, noting that this year marks the largest cohort in the program's history. The NYC Semester Program continues to uphold its tradition of academic diversity, with approximately 50% of students majoring in finance, economics, or business, while the rest come from various fields, led by political science this year.
Dr. Kartal also emphasized the program's evolving focus on expanding internship opportunities across a wider range of disciplines. "We now offer our students internship opportunities at prestigious international organizations, including the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations," he said. Additionally, the program is seeing a growing interest from students in STEM fields such as biomedical sciences, chemistry, computer science, data science, and public health. "One of our goals this year is to expand STEM internship opportunities alongside our program's already existing strengths in finance, economics, and business," Dr. Kartal added. "We are confident that with our alums’ continued support, we will very soon open more doors for our students in STEM fields and bridge their academic interests with real-world experiences and career prospects."
The Laurentian Networking Reception remains a key component of St. Lawrence's NYC Semester Program, which immerses students in NYC's dynamic professional environment through coursework and internship experiences. This event served as a testament to the strength of the Laurentian community, providing valuable opportunities for students to connect with experienced professionals and expand their career horizons.
