Ben Kraws M'24
Graduate student and Skating Saints goaltender Ben Kraws M’24, was featured in North Country Now for signing a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars that will begin in the 2024-25 season.
"I am very grateful for St. Lawrence University, my teammates, Coach Brekke, and the entire coaching staff, who helped me to develop and pursue my goal of a pro career," Ben shared.
Ben will travel to Texas to play for the American Hockey League (AHL) Texas Stars for the rest of its season. Men's hockey coach Brent Brekke said, “Ben’s had a terrific year and earned this NHL opportunity. He's a great example of pushing through adversity and how to achieve what you want. His work ethic, commitment, attitude, and belief in himself are big reasons why he's had a breakout year that led to his contract. He's got a bright future in pro hockey and we can't wait to watch him at that level for years to come!"
St. Lawrence University Softball
The Scarlet and Brown Softball Team spent their spring break in Florida where they are highlighted by NNY360 Watertown Daily Times for sweeping a nonconference tripleheader on Thursday as they won all games of the day during the Florida tournament.
Meredith Rose ’24 and Caelen Jahnle ’27 highlighted the team’s wins against Lawrence with a score of 3-1, its win against Wellesley in overtime with a score of 4-3, and its night game win over Keuka College with a score of 14-4.
St. Lawrence University’s Climate Consciousness
St. Lawrence was featured by Indian Time for hosting the talk, "Communicating Climate Change.” The Adirondack Research Consortium, in collaboration with The Wild Center, North Country Climate Club, and St. Lawrence University, presented the discussion in early March at Eben Holden Hall and aimed to explore effective communication strategies for conveying climate change information between educators, policymakers, parents, and youth.
Cathy Shrady
Associate Professor of Geology Emerita Cathy Shrady was featured in North Country Now for being the newest member of the board of Talking Rivers, Inc. Shrady was also welcomed as the secretary for the local organization that works for the Rights of Nature in the North Country.
St. Lawrence University’s Athletic Renovations
Athletic Business’s recent edition of Daily Digs featured St. Lawrence University’s donor-funded Appleton Arena George W. Karpus ’68 Athletic Center renovations. The article shared the University’s plans to open the center in September 2024. The project will be completed as phase two of the Appleton Arena project. The Karpus Athletic Center includes an expansion of the Michael “Buddy” Cornacchia ’74 Strength and Conditioning Center for all student-athletes, as well as new locker rooms and team facilities for the field hockey and softball teams, and the men’s and women’s lacrosse and rowing teams.
Mindy Pitre
Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology Mindy Pitre was recently interviewed and featured on WWNYTV 7News for her research and discovery of a modern disease in ancient Egypt.
Pitre’s research focuses on the study of human remains and other archeological remains. Pitre has experience studying remains from across the globe, and recently a discovery of hers was published in various news sources, including a major magazine for anthropologists due to her work in Aswan, Egypt.
“I went there to study skeletons and at the end I had time to open one box, we laid out the individual and I recognized they had some sort of joint issue going on.” Pitre was able to determine that the ancient woman had rheumatoid arthritis. “What this means is, we know rheumatoid arthritis existed 3,500 years ago on the continent of Africa,” Pitre shared with 7News.
Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Mike Mahoney and Sons
Men’s lacrosse head coach Mike Mahoney was featured on the NCAA Spotify podcast DIII Small Talk. In the 31st episode of the series, host Katie Mucci welcomed Mahoney and his three sons Mark Mahoney ’22, John Mahoney ’24 and Daniel Mahoney ’27. They talked about choosing to play for their fathe's team, their favorite memories with the squad, why they love Division III athletics, and more. This podcast is a part of Division III's year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Aileen O’Donoghue
Henry Priest Professor of Physics Aileen O’Donoghue was featured in the article “For Solar Eclipse, Colleges Give Physicists Football Star Treatment,” published by Inside Higher Ed. O'Donoghue shared her insights into the upcoming total solar eclipse expected to be visible at St. Lawrence University on April 8, 2024. “Ninety-nine percent of totality is as different from totality as day is from night,” O’Donoghue said, expressing the unique experience in store for viewers who are within the narrow band of totality. “At 99.9 percent of totality, it’s still daytime. You don’t get night until the entire sun is covered.”
Sydney Lohr ’24
The family of Sydney Lohr ’24, a senior psychology and government double major who was fatally struck by a vehicle near her home in Buffalo, shared with WGRZ On Your Side News that they are raising funds to create a scholarship honoring Sydney and that an honorary degree will be posthumously awarded to her.
