St. Lawrence University Eclipse Experts
Henry Priest Professor of Physics Aileen O’Donoghue, Laboratory Coordinator and Astronomer Jeff Miller and NASA Partner Ambassador Tyler Karasinski ’24 were recently featured for their eclipse expertise by NNY360 Watertown Daily Times in the article titled “April 8 Eclipse: Thousands Will Flock to North Country for Celestial Event.”
“The excitement the astronomers project around the total solar eclipse is not hype,” O’Donoghue shared. “The path of totality is about 100 miles wide, so 50 miles away, it’s daylight...so it looks like sunset 360 degrees around...even if it’s cloudy, it’s going to be an event.”
Erika Barthelmess and Daniel French
Director of Nature Up North Erika Barthelmess along with Project Manager of Nature Up North Daniel French were featured on 7News for their work in the organization of the cardboard sled program. This program is in its sixth year and going strong. Barthelmess and Daniel’s "Solar Eclipse Sled," created with the theme of the upcoming total solar eclipse, was the featured image. This event takes place annually at the SUNY Canton sledding hill, where participants create sleds out of cardboard to compete.
Patrick Chase ’25, who works with Nature Up North, shared his appreciation for working with children to share the importance of sustainability. “Seeing kids and helping educate them about how we can be more environmentally conscious... is very rewarding,” Patrick shared.
Aileen O’Donoghue
Henry Priest Professor of Physics Aileen O’Donoghue was recently featured by North Country Now for her solar eclipse presentations, the most recent being offered at Massena Public Library.
“A total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event in the North Country,” shared O’Donoghue. Elaine Fortin, a solar system ambassador and a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory board member at the Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory in Tupper Lake, presented with O'Donoghue on how and when eclipses occur and why the afternoon of April 8will be filled with awe and wonder.
O’Donoghue was also featured by NNY360 Watertown Daily Times for her pulpit guest appearance at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton earlier this month. O’Donoghue presented a service titled “Immersed in Wonder” for the church and the surrounding community to share news about the total solar eclipse and the wonders of astronomy.
Julia Gosling ’23
Julia Gosling ’23 was recently featured by BVM Sports for her “Mandi Schwartz Scholar-Athlete of the Year” award nomination. This award presented by ECAC Hockey celebrates her outstanding achievements in hockey, academics, and community involvement, highlighting the multi-dimensional excellence valued in student-athletes.
St. Lawrence University Men’s Lacrosse
St. Lawrence University Men’s Lacrosse team was recognized in North Country Now for its upcoming 2024 season and this year's national ranking placing the team at 14th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Preseason Poll and 16th according to Inside Lacrosse.
The team kicked off its season on February 17 at Rhodes College and has been performing well with a current record of three wins, and no losses.
Gunnison Memorial Chapel’s Estey Organ
Recently Gunnison Memorial chapel’s Estey Organ has been getting some publicity after being recognized by College Cliffs as a part of the “20 Oldest and Most Amazing Organs in College Campus Chapels.”
College Cliffs presented its list of oldest and most majestic organs in chapels within college campuses in America. These organs are a mark of rich tradition, they come with high historical value and often were created by some of the biggest organ manufacturers from around the world.
Ernest Benedict ’41
The late Ernest Benedict ’41, whose portrait is included in the “Portraying St. Lawrence" art exhibition at the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, is featured in Indian Times. Benedict was the first Indigenous student to graduate from St. Lawrence University. As an elder of the Mohawk Nation, his influence as an educator, traditional leader, and enduring force in social and community development continues to influence Aboriginal people across the globe.
The Howl Story Slam
St. Lawrence University recently hosted “The Howl Grand Slam” in Gullick Theater. North Country Public Radio, North Country Now, along with The Adirondack Writing Center and even The New York Almanac all featured this seventh season of laughter.
The Grand Slam allows contestants to tell an 8-minute story that must be true, and no notes are allowed. Competitors compete for a night of laughter, and all who participate also appear on the Howl podcast, produced and distributed by NCPR.
The show is popular with many, and the first season set growth records at the NCPR station with nearly 35,000 downloads to date, and popularity has only risen from there. The Howl Podcast can be streamed on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google and Amazon.
St. Lawrence University Sustainability Program
St. Lawrence students Julia Hahne ’26, Audrey Bowman ’24, Bryn Rodgers ’26, and Liz Anderson ’26 from the sustainability program were recently featured by North Country Now for their win in the Potsdam town snowman competition. The students’ Farmer Snowman, with goat and chicken snow sculptures, won the "Most North Country" adult award.
