Courtney Kerley ’27
Valedictorian of Lyme Central School and future member of St. Lawrence’s Class of 2027, Courtney Kerley was featured by WWNY.com on May 23 for her exceptional academic and extracurricular performance.
Courtney is a member of the Class of 2027 and hopes to pursue a mathematics major.
Commencement 2023
St. Lawrence University’s celebration of the Class of 2023 was by several media outlets. James Anthony ’23, Cora Ferguson ’23, Brian Uceta ’23, and Grace Wagshul ’23 were featured in video interviews with Watertown-based new outlet WWNY on May 23.
“I’ll take the community with me, that tight-knit bond that everybody has here, and also SLU has just provided me with so many amazing opportunities, leadership roles, and stuff that I will carry on throughout the rest of my life,” said Wagshul.
An article celebrating the graduating class, scholars, and honorary degree recipients was published by NorhCountryNow.com on May 22.
"We know it is the composite of all of your experiences, inside and outside of the classroom, that made you the person about to walk across this stage to receive your degree," said Ana Estevez. "As you leave campus to pursue your next endeavors, my wish for you is that you continue to enjoy learning. That you continue to work with others in pursuit of meaningful goals. And that you remember the role that mentors played in your success. Perhaps, someday, you will get the same chance that I did to pay it forward."

Howard Eissenstat
Associate Professor of History Howard Eissenstat’s expertise on Turkey and international affairs has been tapped into by several media outlets around the globe. Throughout April and May, he weighed in on Turkey’s decision to support Finland's accession to NATO with The Greek Current, wrote a new weekly installment for Middle East Institute's rolling Turkey Election Watch series, and commented on the Turkish government’s treatment of the Uighur population in an article published by CodaStory.com.
“It boils down to a transactionalism,” said Eissenstat, “that both China and Turkey see as part of international relations, since neither is concerned with the rule of law.”
He also weighed in on the role of the economy in the Turkish election in articles published by France24.com and German news outlet, Frankfurter Rundschau.
Eissenstats's recent work has focused increasingly on contemporary Turkish domestic and foreign policy, especially on issues of rule-of-law, minority rights, and the reshaping of political culture under the Justice and Development Party (AKP). At St. Lawrence, he teaches courses on Middle Eastern history and politics and in the First-Year Seminar (FYS). In addition to traditional academic work, Eissenstat served for over a decade as a Turkey Country Specialist for Amnesty International-USA. He has lectured at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. military, and the Canadian Foreign Service Institute, as well as given testimony to the Canadian Senate and offered briefings to Congressional Committees.
Atal Ahmadzai
Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Atal Ahmadzai used his expertise in conflict to explore the cohesion of the Taliban regime in an article published by Foreign Policy in Focus on April 13.
Ahmadzai’s research focuses on the thematic intersection of environment-conflict-development. His scholarly publications are in the areas of human development, global governance, and terrorism. His regional expertise is in South, Central, and Western Asia. Ahmadzai holds a Ph.D. in Global Affairs from Rutgers University.
Aileen O'Donoghue
Henry Priest Professor of Physics Aileen O’Donoghue shared which constellations North Country residents should keep an eye out for during an interview with NCPR published on April 11.
O'Donoghue’s research is primarily in radio astronomy, and she has conducted observations with the Very Large Array, Arecibo radio telescopes, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, the 90-inch Bok telescope at Kitt Peak, and the 1.5m telescope at Cerro Tololo, Chile. She is a member of the ALFALFA undergraduate team and regularly teaches Introduction to Astronomy with Lab, Modern Physics, and Classical Mechanics at St. Lawrence.
