Class of 2024 Commencement
7News reporter Sandy Torres featured St. Lawrence University Commencement in its Sunday evening broadcast, highlighting Boyd Leadership Prize awardee Tyler Karasinski ’24, as well as Chidera Nwenyi ’24, who earned a degree in chemistry, and Victoria Buell ’24, who majored in both biology and anthropology.

It also highlighted speeches by faculty speaker Liz A. Regosin, Adirondack Foundation President Cali Brooks, and conservation leader and honorary degree recipient Kathleen H. Fitzgerald ’92. Reflections by Senior Class President Cara Monteleone and Joan Donovan Speech Contest winner Billie McClosky on their unique college experiences and their call for peers to stay engaged in global issues were also prominently featured.
St. Lawrence University
St. Lawrence University was recognized by College Transitions as a part of its top 200 schools “Worth Your Money” list for the upcoming 2025 academic year.
College Transitions is an online source for higher education data and admissions advice with over 10 million annual readers. The organization annually publish two popular college guidebooks, The Enlightened College Applicant, now in its second edition, and Colleges Worth Your Money, now in its fifth edition, in which St. Lawrence University was featured.
St. Lawrence University has also been recognized by College Transitions as one of “50 Best Colleges for Statistics – 2024" St. Lawrence’s great spread of majors and minors, small class sizes, along with our exceptional 82% of students participating in undergraduate research, were highlighted in the article.
President Kate Morris
The Village of Canton, along with its state partners, announced the kick-off of the NY Forward planning process led by The Local Planning Committee (LPC), which includes St. Lawrence University President Kate Morris along with other local and regional leaders, stakeholders, and community representatives. The $4.5 million state grant will be used to accelerate and expand the revitaization of Canton's downtown.
Morris shared “I am thrilled to see the Canton community recognized in this round of the State’s NY Forward Program. We look forward to working with the Local Planning Committee and our community members throughout this process in recommending projects for funding that will enhance the Village’s economy and overall quality of life.”
Scott Wilhelm
St. Lawrence University Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach Scott Wilhelm was recognized by NNY 360 Watertown Daily Times for being elected to the role of Commissioner for Excelsior Empire Regional Volleyball Association, or XLRVA. The commissioner role is responsible for overseeing the governance of the Excelsior region and striving to ensure opportunities for the entire region to play and be involved in the sport of volleyball. Wilhelm’s first term begins August 1, 2024.
Our Town of Canton
North Country Now shared news that the Town of Canton is creating no- and low-mow zones on village public land by Bend in the River Park and is working with the Canton Sustainability Committee to identify areas to plant native species that support pollinators and add more low-mow zones.
The town has made decisions with sustainability efforts in mind and references St. Lawrence University's low-mow pollinator gardens and the work of sustainable practices as a catalyst for their recent decisions.
Rayna Bidwell ’24
The Finch Research Network Featured St. Lawrence University r Rayna Bidwell’24 for her student research.
“I have always had a passion for wildlife and nature. I’m primarily interested in herpetology but have grown a great appreciation for ornithology and birdwatching during my time in college” Rayna shared.

Rayna’s research aims to understand the fluctuations in food availability for these birds, which can help in predicting their movements and supporting their conservation amidst concerns over declining bird populations in North America. The study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring to ensure the viability of finch habitats and emphasizes the challenges posed by variability in cone production and species preferences for different types of seeds.
