St. Lawrence Students Advance at Fed Challenge
St. Lawrence University’s Fed Challenge team has advanced to the semifinal round, which will take place on Nov. 16 at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The College Fed Challenge is a competition designed to bring real-world economics into the classroom. Teams play the role of monetary policymakers by analyzing economic conditions and recommending a course for monetary policy.
Led by Professor of Economics Cynthia Bansak and Lynn Smith Fox, spouse of President William L. Fox, the team of St. Lawrence students enrolled in Bansak’s Monetary Policy course, ECON 410, participated in the initial round of the College Fed Challenge on Oct. 30, in New York City. The St. Lawrence students, who met with a number of Laurentian alumni two weeks prior to the event, competed against 40 colleges and universities and advanced to the semifinal round in the Liberty Street division. The winning team from the Liberty Street division will represent the Second District in the National College Fed Challenge on Dec. 2, 2015, at the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C.
The final student team that competed included Zane Belden ’18 of Queensbury, New York, Edward (Fraser) Bostwick ’17 of Katonah, New York, Phillip (Miles) Crump ’16 of Baltimore, Maryland, Sarah Pyc ’16 of Buffalo, New York, and Collin Shapiro ’16 of Greenwich, Connecticut.
