A poem by St. Lawrence University student Sydney Minnehan '21 was named one of the winners in the poetry category of the 2020 Intro Journals Project competition, conducted by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.
Minnehan's poem, “Analogies to various facets of evolution (people of influence)”, was one of seven winners selected from undergraduate and graduate entries from across the country. The Intro Journals Project is a literary competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by students currently enrolled in AWP member programs. Program directors are invited to nominate students' works, which are selected for publication in participating literary journals.
"I wrote 'Analogies to various facets of evolution (people of influence)' after reading Kadijah Queen's book, 'Black Peculiar,' in [Visiting Assistant Professor of Poetry] J. Michael Martinez's class," Minnehan says. "My poem uses a format inspired by Queen, but I decided to integrate footnotes to simultaneously make her style my own and dive deeper into each of the topics I focused on. I am so excited to be a selected winner for AWP's Intro Journals Project and couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to have my work published this spring."
Minnehan's poem was originally published in Puerto del Sol. She is an English major from Oak Bluffs, Mass.
