St. Lawrence’s Commitment to Sustainability Recognized
St. Lawrence University once again has been named one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the United States.
The Princeton Review included St. Lawrence in the 2015 edition of its Guide to 353 Green Colleges, released on April 16. The guide profiles colleges with the most exceptional commitments to sustainability based on their academic offerings and career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives and activities.
Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s senior vice president and publisher, said that an institution’s commitment to environmental issues is important to college seekers.
“Among nearly 10,000 teens who participated in our 2015 College Hopes and Worries Survey, 61 percent told us that having information about a school’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the college,” he said. “We strongly recommend the schools in this guide to environmentally-minded students who seek to study and live at green colleges.”
Louise Gava, sustainability coordinator and assistant director of the Sustainability Program, said St. Lawrence must continue to improve the sustainability of its operations, expand current co-curricular sustainability opportunities and assess the sustainability literacy of our graduates, all so as to attract and retain the students who are interested in our sustainability educational programs
“St. Lawrence has developed a culture of sustainability across all sectors of our campus,” Gava said. “We have laid the foundation from which we can build and create real and lasting change.”
St. Lawrence is also included in The Princeton Review’s Best 379 Colleges, Best Northeastern College, Colleges That Pay You Back, Green Colleges and Private Schools lists.
The Princeton Review chose the colleges based on “Green Rating” scores (from 60 to 99) that the company tallied in summer 2014 for 861 colleges using data from its 2013-14 survey of school administrators. Schools were asked to report on sustainability-related policies, practices, and programs. More than 25 data points were weighted in the assessment. Schools with Green Rating scores of 83 or higher made it into this guide. St. Lawrence scored a Green Rating of 93.
