Student’s Work Wins Shoe Designer Fluevog’s Contest
Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog chose four finalists for his Fluevog Creative Ad Contest and his fans selected the winning design, which belongs to a St. Lawrence University student.
Raven Larcom ’20 entered six of the nearly 90 designs submitted for the contest, which asked designers to create an ad featuring the company’s F-Shoes Hi Asta. The famed shoemaker chose the finalists, which included one of Larcom’s designs. Fans of the brand then voted for their favorite ad during the first week in March and Larcom's work was chosen as the winning design.
Larcom’s submission came from an assignment in Associate Professor of Art and Art History Amy Hauber’s Digital Media and Culture 2 course, which is a combination studio/seminar course where students spend time developing innovative and complex ideas and forms and advancing their vision(s) via Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as Microsoft PowerPoint.
Hauber created the Fluevog Brief/Challenge, and each student in the class had to come up with two designs to submit for the contest. “This was a great way to provide students with a professional working brief and have them create their own designs for an actual contest, providing them real-world experience in graphic design,” Hauber said.
Larcom, a biology and art and art history double major from Bethlehem, N.H., took this course so she could further explore her interests in digital media and refine her skills as a digital artist.
“I have really enjoyed having a lot of creative freedom regarding the assignments and time to create fun digital art,” Larcom said. “We spend a lot of time going through each other's projects and providing feedback, which has been very useful. I feel honored and shocked to have been named a finalist as so many amazing designs were submitted.”
Larcom will receive a gift certificate for $1,000 to John Fluevog Shoes, a bio on FluevogCreative, and her artwork and name will be put in front of thousands of people via a selection of superior magazines.
