Information for External Researchers
Required IRB Approval
Researchers who wish to recruit members of the St. Lawrence University community for their research must obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval from their home institution prior to recruiting those participants. External researchers are not required to obtain approval from the St. Lawrence University IRB.
University Assistance with Recruitment
St. Lawrence will assist researchers in recruitment of participants based on the benefits to our community of the research as well as the costs of such assistance. Researchers must share a copy of their approved IRB proposal as well as proof of project approval with the chair of St. Lawrence’s IRB (Cathy Crosby: ccrosby@stlawu.edu) prior to any assistance being provided.
The following will be taken into consideration when determining the extent to which SLU will assist external researchers with the recruitment of participants from our community:
- Whether the researchers are affiliated with either one of the Associated Colleges of St. Lawrence Valley or one of the New York Six colleges;
- The extent to which the St. Lawrence University community will benefit directly from the researcher;
- Whether the purposes of the research align with our stated learning goals, values, or current initiatives;
- Whether the data will be shared back with the SLU community; and
- The potential national or international significance of the research.
Please note that, in keeping with our university’s policy restricting the use of student listservs for research purposes, external researchers will not be allowed to recruit participants through the SLU listservs.
