ADK Semester 2019 Begins

Adirondack Semester 2019 has begun! And this year is extra special because it is the 20th anniversary of the Adirondack Semester with a big reunion celebration planned for Oct. 12.

Students arrived at St. Lawrence’s Camp Canaras (Saranac backwards) on Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks on Aug. 15 for an orientation and two full days of Wilderness First Aid training. All now have their WFA certification through SOLO and their CPR certifications. Faculty and staff joined us on the 15th and met the group.

When the students weren’t busy with WFA training, repacking gear and pitching in with meal clean up, there was still time to swim, paddle board and kayak.

On Sunday the 18th, the students packed their canoe barrels, got some instruction in proper PFD fitting, securing gear in the canoes, map reading and the paddling route, chose their canoe paddles, had a lesson on paddle strokes and set off on their canoe expedition. The weather was perfect and looks good for the rest of the week!

We look forward to seeing them at Arcadia (the yurt village) on Friday, Aug. 23! We’ll post another update soon after that and from then on you’ll be seeing weekly updates written by the students.

Cheers!
