Environmental Sculptures
September 30, 2024
On the final day of a warm and sunny September, Professor Mark Sturges invited the Arcadians to build environmental sculptures out of found materials such as sticks, leaves, pine needles, and ferns. As part of their Writing the Adirondacks course, this assignment asks students to adopt the style and approach of environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy to create a visually appealing and meaningful sculpture, the design of which grows organically from the landscape of Massawepie and the outdoor experience of the semester. Many students constructed their sculptures as commentaries on human-nature relationships and connected their works to the personal and academic journey they are currently taking together. You can view these Arcadian artworks in the photos below.
