The Students are Here!
The students arrived at Arcadia on Friday, Aug. 23 around 5:15 p.m., tired but happy having survived Dead Creek and the rest of this “character building” final day of the canoe expedition.
They deservedly are pretty proud of the miles they paddled and the portages they managed.
Waiting to greet them with sliced watermelon were Director Cathy and her dog Tashi (Kim’s dog Scooter joined us later) and three 2018 ADK Semester alumni who would stay to cook for the next couple of days and teach the fine art of sauna-ing.
Saturday was a whirlwind of orientation to Arcadia and all its systems and procedures from cooking to “Clive” the composting toilet. Sunday was a day of rest, laundry, swimming, trail exploration and reading for class.
Having slept in the yurts at least once, students have been trying out other locales for sleeping: the barge and around the camp fire. Early conclusions: morning mist from the lake gets you a lot more wet if you are sleeping on the barge. Students have been thrilled to receive mail and have already sent some letters back to campus for mailing.
Classes began on Monday. We’ve got a relatively quiet weekend planned, staying on site next weekend, and after that…well, look for weekly updates written by the students themselves!
