Kenya Program Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Nene Karingi and our KSP community members past and present.
In 2024, the KSP community lost one of our own. Nene Karingi, grew up at the KSP campus in Nairobi and was the beloved son of our long time Administrative Director Lina Karingi. Nene was a vibrant young man and was part of a wider community of staff and families who call our Karen campus home. As a university student with a bright future, his passing sparked KSP colleagues and friends to come together and honor Nene and the many other staff, community partners and alumni whose life was forever impacted and tied to the SLU Kenya program.
Each semester we add more KSP students, alumni and community partners to this close knit community spanning more that 50 years. Please help us honor the life and memory of Nene and all our KSP community members whose life was shaped by engagement with the Kenya Program and the wider KSP community .
Gifts will be used to create an endowed Kenya Program Memorial Scholarship to help a talented Kenyan student get their degree at SLU.
Alumni and friends of the Kenya program are encouraged to donate in memory/honor of Nene or any other KSP community member from the programs past or present. If you would like to include a photo with your gift to honor a particular memory of a former KSP community member no longer with us, please contact Matt Carotenuto. We would like to include a picture of KSP community members no longer with us and include them in our gallery to honor their memory below.

The Kenya Program Memorial Scholarship will help honor their legacy by assisting a talented Kenyan student attend St. Lawrence University's main campus in Canton NY.
KSP Memorial Gallery- Naftal Nyamwaro (KSP Staff Member)
Naftal joined KSP in the 1970s, when the program was based in Westlands and worked tirelessly until he passed away in the early 1990s. He was a caretaker, logistics coordinator and key part of the KSP expansion outside Nairobi. Naftal loved KSP and its students. He was always on call, drove endless miles for the program, and became the right hand to KSP’s leadership. One of his outstanding legacies was the KSP’s Kisii homestays, which he and his wife/colleague, Joyce, arranged and coordinated. Everyone who knew him will remember the twinkles in his eyes, his giggle, and his easy laugh.
KSP Memorial Gallery- Clement Kate (KSP Staff Member)
Clement was a one of the longest serving KSP staff members in program history. A friend and mentor to generations of students, Clement took enormous pride in his work keeping our Nairobi campus grounds beautiful for students and staff alike.

KSP Memorial Gallery- Hussein Bonaya (KSP Staff Member)
Hussein worked with the Kenya Program for 27 years, from 1986 until his passing in 2013. He was a dedicated worker, paying utmost attention to the safety and security of everyone on our Nairobi campus, rising to the role of Deputy Head Askari. Hussein was passionate about education and excellence of the next generation. He instilled these values in his children who are now professionals in various fields.
KSP Memorial Gallery- Ali Pomponio (KSP visiting director and Professor of Anthropology)
Ali was a distinguished professor of anthropology and a long-time supporter of the KSP and off-campus study at SLU. In the 1990s she co-directed the Kenya Program along with her husband and fellow anthropology professor Richard Perry.

Barrett Peterson KSP '81 SLU '82, and parent of four KSP alumni
An orthodontist, avid woodworker and outdoorsman, and builder of community, Barrett inspired a generation of family members to follow in his footsteps on KSP. His time on KSP had a profound impact on his ensuing career after he spent his IDS volunteering at a dental clinic, and the program deepened his love for adventure and belief that the most fulfilling experiences are on the other side of your comfort zone.
