Rejean A. Shero ’84

Rejean “Ray” Shero has been a tremendous leader in the sport of hockey for decades.  While donning the Scarlet and Brown at Appleton Arena, Ray served as a two-year captain and led the team in scoring as a junior and senior, racking up 135 career points (58 goals, 77 assists).  After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and retiring from his playing career, he became a player agent for the Sports Consulting Group until 1993 when he was hired by fellow Skating Saint alumnus Randy Sexton ’82 as an Assistant General Manager by the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators.

This hire sparked Ray’s career in the NHL, as he worked as an Assistant General Manager for the newly-formed Nashville Predators before being hired as the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006.  Anchored by players signed and drafted by Ray, the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings in game seven to claim the Stanley Cup in 2009, the city’s first NHL title in 17 years.  The triumph allowed Ray to hoist the Cup like his father, Fred, did as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975.  Ray currently serves as the General Manager of the New Jersey Devils and is also actively involved with USA Hockey, is a member of its National Team Advisory Board, and served as associate general manager for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.  

Ray serves on St. Lawrence’s Hockey Alumni Association Executive Board, a group of dedicated hockey alumni, parents and fans committed to strengthening the men’s and women’s hockey programs.  He has hosted numerous Laurentian events and helped shape the newly-formed Legends of Appleton, a recognition program celebrating the storied history and tradition of Saints Hockey.

Ray is a member of St. Lawrence’s Candle in the Wilderness Society, having been a frequent supporter of the St. Lawrence Fund, Saints Athletics and men’s hockey.
