Creating a Course Plan in APR 2
Be sure you have internet access on July 24th to register for your courses. Advising begins on July 8th and lasts until July 23rd. During this time, you should be building a course plan in APR 2 and talking with your advisor. Check your SLU email for news and updates.
By the time you receive your placement e-mail in early to mid-July, you will know a lot about your fall semester, including your FYP course, your FYP academic advisor, and your housing. Nonetheless, you still need to make a course plan by choosing a complete fall schedule. In the first year, a full schedule is normally 4.5 units per semester because the FYP and FYS count for 1.5 units each. Students wishing to take two science courses with labs in addition to one other course and the FYP may carry a load of 5.0 units. Courses typically count for 1 unit. Students on financial aid, international students, and NCAA student-athletes must carry a full course load of a minimum of 3.5 units.
How do I build a course plan?
Using your SLU network username and password, you will be able to access our Academic Planning and Registration (APR 2) system. APR 2 is the on-line system that allows you to:
- browse available courses
- add a course plan
- edit your course plan
- view your progress
- update your Emergency Contact info
- register for courses (starting July 24)
- See all APR 2 Demonstration Videos here
As a First Year student, please consider the following:
- Not all courses are open to first-year students. Many courses have pre-requisites or are simply too advanced for new college students. Pay attention to those restrictions and read the course description carefully.
- You are the last group of students to register for fall classes. This means that many classes are already full, and you will need to wait to take those classes in later semesters.
- Any courses designated as special topics are not offered regularly, but can also fulfill various requirements and/or elective credits. Special Topics courses are numbered at the 3000 level, and are equivalent to 100 and 200 level courses. These courses are available to entering first-year students unless a specific pre-requisite is noted in the course description.
- Please note that all students who have not yet declared a major are classified by the system with a Multifield major. This is simply a placeholder to allow the program to track your progress in fulfilling general education requirements for your degree and will change once you declare your major, which typically happens in the sophomore year.
- Many courses have seats saved especially for incoming first-year students because those courses are particularly suitable for new students. So, there are still lots of courses to choose from.
Have fun exploring!
How do you decide what classes to put on your course plan?
You have several resources available to help you build that plan:
- Familiarize yourself with the General Education and Graduation Requirements at St. Lawrence.
- Consult the Academic Departments and Programs page or look for a link on Departments and Programs' websites entitled, "Information for First Year Students." You should also feel free to contact the person listed as Chair or Coordinator for each department or program with questions about that specific department or program.
- Other information you might find helpful includes information on Pre-Health, Pre-Law and Other Pre-Professional Programs and International/Off-Campus Study.
- Review the Academic Advising & Resources page.
- To view a list of courses and times offered for fall go to the Registrar's office website, scroll down, left side box labeled Term Information and select Course Schedule.
- Check out the Frequently Asked Questions and use the Academic Planning Worksheet.
- Contact your academic advisor or the First-Year Program (315-229-5909). They will be happy to provide some guidance and answer whatever questions you might have.
When should you have a course plan in place?
By the time you arrive at St. Lawrence in August, you should be registered for a full course load. You can meet with your FYP advisor on Tuesday, August 27th to review your course schedule and make changes if necessary.
