Larry Winston '60, P'85, GP'07,'10,'11,'17

Dear Laurentian community,

I write today to share the sad news that Board Chair Emeritus and Trustee Emeritus Larry Winston ’60, P’85, GP’07,’10,’11,’17 died on March 18, at the age of 86. A devoted alumnus, Larry served St. Lawrence University with distinction as a longtime Trustee and Chair of the Board of Trustees. His Laurentian legacy also lives on in his daughter, Donna ’85, a University Trustee, and in his five grandchildren, Danielle Weaver Nesselbush ’07, Doug ’10 and Drew ’11 Weaver, Morgan O’Donnell Robson ’17, and Matthew O’Donnell.

Born and raised in Hempstead, New York, Larry graduated from St. Lawrence in 1960 with a degree in Psychology. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and a proud member of the University’s ROTC program. Larry went on to serve as an Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division, stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii. After completing his service with honors in 1964, he returned to Long Island, New York and launched a successful career on Wall Street.

Larry spent decades in the financial services industry, at E.F. Hutton, Quinoco Resources as Chairman and later serving as Vice Chairman of Angeles Corporation. Despite his many professional obligations and achievements, Larry remained steadfastly committed to St. Lawrence, serving as a Trustee for decades and becoming Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2001. (He was named Board Chair Emeritus in 2008 and Trustee Emeritus in 2009.) Larry also served on several reunion and fundraising committees and offered his professional expertise as a career advisor to many Laurentians.

In addition to his lifelong service to St. Lawrence, Larry and his wife Sally have shown their strong support through philanthropy, contributing generously to multiple campaigns and consistently to the St. Lawrence Fund. In 1986, they established the Lawrence J. Winston Family Scholarship to support students with financial need who have excelled both in their academic studies and as citizens of the community. In 2005, the Winston Room in the Sullivan Student Center was named for Larry and Sally, in recognition of their generous commitments. In 2009, Larry was awarded an honorary degree and Sally was recognized with a University Citation at Commencement, and in subsequent years, Larry proudly handed diplomas to his grandchildren as they graduated.

Beyond his career and service to St. Lawrence, Larry was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for fishing, boating, and golf. He loved sharing stories of his fishing adventures, and in retirement, he spent much of his time traveling and enjoying the water. At the heart of his life was his family, with whom he created a lifetime of cherished memories in their homes in Florida and Shelter Island.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sally; his daughters, Debbie Weaver (Dean), Donna, and Deirdre O’Donnell; as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Laurentian community is grateful for Larry’s dedication to St. Lawrence. His leadership, generosity, and enthusiasm for life will remain an inspiration. Please join us in celebrating Larry’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here. To honor Larry’s legacy, the family encourages contributions to the St. Lawrence Fund, a cause he passionately championed, at www.stlawu.edu/give or St. Lawrence University, Attention Kim Hissong, 23 Romoda Drive, Canton, NY 13617.
