Memories of Alice Hessert
My first year at St. Lawrence was Alice’s last, and even though we overlapped so briefly, she was a profound influence on me as a teacher. She loved to give her students enough space to make a mess of things, and then she would say something like, “Now what would an adult do to fix this?” Her influence on both the teaching and curriculum in our department is still keenly felt today by those of us lucky enough to work with her. She loved what we do and was exceptional at it. She was also a lot of fun.

Although I ran into Alice quite frequently on campus and at social events, I remember her vividly when all the faculty couples that were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversaries that year got together and chartered a boat to take us across the St. Lawrence to Brockville for a special evening including dinner. We had such fun! When Norm and Alice retired and moved away we really missed them.
