Memories of Board Chair Emeritus Larry Winston ’60, P’85, GP’07,’10,’11,’17
Larry Winston's leadership, in name and in practice, was inspirational to me, who saw his kindness, humor, and insight up close for many years. Always thinking of St. Lawrence’s best interests, always respectful of every voice in the room—including staff—he offered an exemplary way of serving and guiding. I appreciated his wry comments at Board meetings, keeping it real, keeping our perspective. His generosity to St. Lawrence is unmatched in his time, in his talents, and with Sally, his treasure. Those of us lucky enough to have worked with him will be grateful forever. Loving condolences to Sally and the many Laurentians for whom he was patriarch. Lisa Mazzola Cania M'82
Larry Winston was the first SLU Board Chair I worked with when I joined the President's Office in 2001. Larry always warm and friendly to us in the office. You always had a joke or two and we loved hearing from you. We also loved the popcorn that you sent us at Christmas time! It was always good, but what we appreciated most was that you thought about us outside of board weekends. I treasure the time I was able to spend with him and his family (a true SLU legacy family) when they were on campus. They are connections I continue to treasure to this day. My thoughts and love are with the entire family. Samantha Johnson, President's Office
I pass my condolences to Larry's family. I only met Larry once or twice when he was visiting campus, but I very much appreciate his deep commitment to St. Lawrence University. Sending care his whole family. Erica Barthelmess, Professor of Biology
I am so sad to hear of Larry's passing, and I send love to Sally and Donna and Danni and his whole wonderful extended family. Larry has been a true friend to St. Lawrence, and it has been such a joy to know him. He embodied Laurentian characteristics: generosity, integrity, compassion, and (especially) knowing how to enjoy life. He always had a smile on his face and he was always kind.
I knew Larry best when he was Board chair and I was faculty delegate to the Board. It was always a joy to talk with him about all things St. Lawrence. He was a great Board chair and a great person. We were lucky to know him and we will miss him. Sending love to the whole wonderful Winston family. Patti Frazer Lock, Professor of Math, Computer Science, and Statistics
It was Larry who called me one afternoon to invite me to join the Board as a Term Trustee. I soon learned that he had nominated me! Larry became my mentor and was incredibly supportive. He constantly stayed in touch and was always inquiring about me and my family. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to be associated with Larry. He will be missed as a dear friend and as a very loyal Laurentian. Joseph P. Richardson, Class of 1963
